Ok, so please tell me I’m not the only one who dries up like a prune on flights. My throat is generally dry, so are my hands, and always my face.
That’s why I’ve put my pride aside and now take the necessary steps to ensure maximum hydration, moisture, and barrier protection while I’m flying high.
Let me start this with a disclaimer and say that this routine requires commitment, effort, and NO SHAME.
To start, forget about wearing a full face of makeup! I don’t even wear bronzer or concealer on a flight. Trying to take that off is way too much of a hassle. Plus, with everything going on when you fly (i.e., getting through security and trekking to my gate), I’m guaranteed to break a sweat.
So, do you want to learn how to salvage your skin on flights and keep it hydrated and protected? Let’s get into it.
STEP 1: CLEAN YOUR FACE
Now, although I don’t wear makeup on my flight, I use my Clean Skin Club Clean Wipes to clean my face. Depending on the time of my flight, I’ve already either done my AM or PM routine. I’m not a fan of adding anything to dirty skin or applying a sheet mask or anything over sunscreen. So, I use these wipes to get off the mild dirt I’ve accumulated getting through the airport and to my seat. These wipes are cleansing, gentle, adequate for on the go, and big enough to cover my entire face and neck. I’ll grab an individually-packaged wipe out of my bag, and gently clean my face with it.
STEP 2: APPLY A SHEET MASK
I have NO SHAME. Yes, I put a sheet mask on while I’m on an airplane. And yes, people are commenting on it. But, I’ll be the one laughing when I have no wrinkles in 10 years. (#lifegoals)
During my latest flight, I used the Mediheal N.M.F Intensive Hydrating Sheet Mask because they’re SO hydrating.
Remember, sheet masks left on too long can deplete your skin of moisture, so it’s essential to be aware of how long you keep on your mask and how it’s feeling. Because of the dry air on planes, I usually keep sheet masks on for about 10 minutes. Whereas, I typically leave sheet masks on for 15-20 minutes at home.
I also rub the used sheet mask on my neck and hands. They need love too!
STEP 3: LAYER ON YOUR ESSENCE
An essence is a concentrated formula that specifically targets wrinkles, fine lines, and dull skin. Although they’re lightweight and watery, with regular use, you’ll notice that your skin is smoother and brighter. Essence can’t turn back time, but it will revitalize your skin so that you look more youthful.
On my latest flight, I applied Neogen Real Ferment Micro Essence because it’s so legit! This stuff will bring elasticity, hydration, and bounce to your skin. And on a plane, I apply a lot. Like, I go full-on nuts here.
STEP 4: SMEAR ON YOUR MOISTURIZER
Repeat steps 2 & 3. Just KIDDING?
Actually, sometimes I do repeat steps 2 & 3. If you’re on a flight that’s a few hours, then repeating these steps aren’t necessary. But, when I’m on a long haul flight (more than 3 hours), you can bet I’m going to sheet mask at least twice.
OK, I DIGRESS. THE REAL NEXT STEP IS TO APPLY A MOISTURIZER.
Lately, I’ve been using Jordan Samuel Skin’s The Performance Cream because it protects my skin barrier, but it’s not too heavy. Heavy moisturizing creams USUALLY result in whiteheads. And this can be pretty typical for those with my skin type but also acne-prone skin. This cream is full of peptides, olive leaf, and chamomile extracts, so my skin is calm, hydrated, and protected.
STEP 5: SEAL IT ALL IN
Remember, we are fighting the dry air! So, I like to apply a heavier facial oil rich in omegas because they specifically benefit dry skin.
On my last flight, I used Drunk Elephant’s Virgin Marula Oil. I know I’ve mentioned this oil in the past, but I love how nourishing it is! It feels incredible, and it doesn’t leave my face super greasy.
STEP 6: CHILL OUT
Finally, I either take a nap, watch a movie, or read a magazine. And I drink water, so I’m not puffy when I get off the plane.
Regardless, I know I’ll enjoy smooth skin that won’t look tired or feel uncomfortable when I land. Hydrating and moisturizing on planes is SO good for your skin. You can see and feel the difference!
